Center for Student Organizations

UGA HEROs is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children affected and infected with HIV/AIDS in the state of Georgia. We fund raise throughout the year with date auctions, corporate  events, letter writing, and small local fundraisers to implement mentoring programs in the lives of children who need help the most. The children sponsored by our organization not only cope with a terminal disease, but 90%  of them come from a household income of less than $10,000 a year and over 50% have lost as least one parent to AIDS. These children face adversity in every aspect of their life and we are here to help alleviate the stress in their life and be a positive influence.

Plans for this year?
We are winding down are year but have the HERO OLYMPICS, the pinnacle of our fundraising and the most rewarding event for members, on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Clarke Central High School. We bus in over 150 children from the Atlanta area and bring them to campus for them to have the funnest day possible. This is an opportunity for them to forget the worries in their life and feel like a regular kid for once. We would love this event to be highlighted!

What are the benefits of being involved in your student organization?
The benefits are endless, really. Not only does one acquire leadership skills, become a more responsible and accountable person, meet people who are dedicated to the same cause they are, and realize the amount of dedication it takes to keep a student run organization afloat; but we are a very unique organization that exposes all of our members to the children they work so hard for. We give all of our members the opportunity to meet
and be truly touched by the children we fundraise for through interactive campus events like the HERO Olympics. Does your organization collaborate with other student organizations?
We receive immense support through Greek Life, Campus Events, Residence Halls, and numerous other campus organizations. Please list (and briefly explain) any awards or recognition your student organization has received:

- 2007 & 2008 Organization of the Year
We are one of the largest organizations on campus and embody the ideal of volunteerism.
- 2007 Campus Event of the Year (HERO Olympics)
This is an annual event that involves over 150 of our children. We match each of the children up with members of the organization and they get to spend the day together, learning from each other. There are fun stations at the Olympics like face painting, cookie making, relay races, performances, and much more. We let the kids have a day just for them, so they can forget their worries and experience what every child deserves...a day of fun!
- Last year raised over $306,000
We accomplished this through the fundraising methods explained above
